Wednesday 121714

News – the USATF is ****ed.  It is messed up with its race dq’s, its elections of officers, its shady dealings with corporate sponsors, and its inequity in dealing with funding of female versus male athletes in the MUT space.  And that is just naming a few of the latest issues.  It leaves me wondering if I should even engage in anything the USATF touches, including XC next year.  I feel compelled to because there are a lot of good people trying to change it, and because that event is well – frankly fun.  But I also feel that by showing up, I am supporting an idiot organization.

Then there is the IAAF.

-John Treacy says screw it just train harder Ireland.

-More Friel on periodization.

- I think the stat on what % of boys champs versus girls champs at the HS XC Footlocker championships is interesting – as it tells a story of the arc of girls athletic development versus boys.  It will be interesting to see how NXN champs play out.  I’d think that Efraimson is a pretty good shot at making the Olympics in 2020.

- Not running related but a fascinating article on Yahoo’s ride as of late.

- Solid read from the comments yesterday.

Been getting feedback on my thoughts on Leadville.  Good feedback where folks are telling me what to focus on, what not to worry about.  My largest concern going in is the potential meltdown I’d have after the sunsets.  This is based on a case study of one but I got to a point with that case where I was taking  close to two and a half hours to cover seven miles.  That melt down was probably a combination of being woefully underprepared (very few runs over 15 miles that year), going out a bit fast (although never faster than 8 minute pace on a flat and fast course), but mostly just mailing it in and not digging in when it got dark.  I came buzzing into 50 miles at 8:22, but the smoke showing I was flaming out had started back at 20 miles.  I could smell it.  13 and half hours to cover the next 50.  Ouch.  Bob has been happy to remind me that this 50 mile split is slower than his 100 PR.  In any case, I actually held “okay” for the next two laps (or through 64ish miles).  That put me around 8PM, or shortly after the sun set.  From there, things went really south and miles started going to 20 minutes a mile.  It was obviously some fatigue and not just the dark, but I think I checked out at that point.  Bob was able to get me a little straight in the last lap as the sun was coming back up.  By the way, if you look at that graph, you can calculate how I was actually AHEAD of Bob for the first 50 miles (and he’d catch me some where on lap 8).  Yup.

I expect to listen to this tomorrow.

Afternoon – Bob came out to my area, and given it was cool, he schooled the daylights out of me – even though he is less two weeks out of a marathon.  Did six of the kilo repeats … I really had no fight for 8 today and sadly I knew that going in.  Same gig as a couple of weeks ago … odds are down, evens are up, done on a six minute round.  3:31, 3:48, 3:27, 3:51; 3:29 and 3:54.  That put me at 3:39 across the six (or supposedly an average of 29:12 pace for 8k even though it was only six).  An improvement in some regards over a couple of weeks ago, but a step back in others given the lesser reps.  I ran faster but I ran less reps … could be that I ran faster cuz I was with Bob.  I was put a fork in me done on the last climb on the last one.  But even that one was only as slow as my first return trip a couple of weeks ago.  I will take it as progress.   I want to get to a point where I can average sub six on the climbs and the average at 3:35 (over 8).  I think once I am there my confidence to hold that pace on the flats in the XC race will line up.  I will be back to this one. 11 miles.

Given I saw that nearly every FKT in Valley Forge Park was held by David R, I was surprised when caught one by accident last week.  Of course, I was not surprised when I saw this today:

David – go get this one.

A good read on PEDs.

Great stuff from Jack Daniels.

This is my boss.  Sort of.

I have been trying to read a thing about Leadville each day … just to learn shit.  Google lessons learned Leadville 100 and you get a ton of hits.  Success stories and a ton of failure stories.

A recent interview with PPA legend Dobson.

Music …

“There is a zero chance of taking the marathon seriously. I only decided on Friday that I was going to run the full distance.” Kevin Sullivan, 40yo 2:40 guy (who was a 3:50 guy … in the mile)

I am a bit disappointed the Bekele is gonna go race Dubai.  I am sure he will post some redonkulus time there but I rather see him go head to head with Kimetto, Kebede, Mutai, and Kipsang.

I generally found the Rich Roll interview with Dean-o to be good.  I think Dean gets a bit of an underserved bad rap by some in the ultra world.  There is a lot of good stuff in this cast, including Dean addressing some of those concerns.  … that said, there is a little bit of the “drop what you are doing and follow your dream” theme in there that I cringe at.  I see this message as a bit … well, wrong.  I mean, outright, it is not wrong, but it seems to get wrapped in this idea that “if you do what you love you will never work a day in your life” craptastic message that makes no sense.  In fact, the people who are doing what they love seem to be working their ass off doing it.   But there has to be a space for your vocation not being what you love, but something else you do to support who or what you love otherwise.  I feel this message of “do what you love” slips into some sort of broader narcissism but that might become a bigger #GOM rant that is not well stated.

In any case, I am pretty sure that is not what Dean intended in the interview, but I have become a bit sensitive to that sort of messaging.

25 who influence more … Justin Mock (image from Colorad.

Top American at London in 2010, sub 40 in the Bolder Boulder 10k in a gorilla suit, regular Pack Burro Racer (and finally securing a win this year at BV), 4th at PPM in a sub 4:10 performance.  Dude has wheels (even if his mile and 5k PRs are soft, I don’t think he ever really went after those the way he could).  Occasionally he races those little dogs he has too, but that will probably be forgotten once he gets a World Championship in Fairplay next year.  Well, that is assuming he actually runs and can hold onto his burro.  ;)

But seriously his influence to the running community in Colorado is not about that.  It is really about his writing.  He contributes regularly to Running Times (as in what seems every week) with thoughtful articles and interviews, as well as consistently and more locally to RunColo.  In terms of both local and national coverage of the MUT scene, I cannot think of anyone who has been a more influential journalist.

Late afternoon – 9 miles with some pick ups, strides.  I thought I’d do something structured, but I felt a bit fried in the head.  I hit my downhill near 1500 meter stretch in 4:40, so not bad but I was not feeling a lot of fight.  I felt cold out there today too and was not enjoying that and then I saw the guy running in the sandals … damn it.

News stuff – Shalene provides some good insight as to a pro’s view of dopers.
-Strava, love it or hate it.
- I have spent way too much time reading Mitch’s data as of late. (no, wait, there is more)  (really I can’t see me putting this sort of thing together)

AM – a little bit of yoga with TZ to wake and start the day.  Perhaps the most entertaining part of it all was when our soon to be 17 year old daughter walked into the living room as she awoke and looked at the two of us … rolled her eyes, and said, “What?  What?  What is this?  Why are my parents so out there?”  Sorry kid – you live in yer own reality TV show.

Dusk – 10 miles easy.  Not physically tired but not hugely motivated today either.  Not unmotivated.  Just not motivated to get after it.

CPTR looks out for me as I will probably be in Israel at that time.

Sunday 121415

Met up with MK, Sandrock, Peter H and a few of the other old dogs and ran out of Eldorado on Fowler.  Snowing lightly, and a bit wet.   IMG_2840IMG_2841IMG_2844
The snow got a bit thicker as we got higher.IMG_2848

MK taking up the top of Goshawk (I think that is the name of it)IMG_2856
The old sea bed with ripples and all. IMG_2857 Great to get out with this group.  They have PRs that blow away nearly everyone I know, but they don’t wear them.  Their times at that time were humble.  They run now to share the some strides together, a laugh, and to crack wise.

Once the group finished, I elected to tack on and ran back to Boulder along the Mesa – looking to get some miles on the somewhat compromised legs (from the 20 yesterday).  17.2 miles on the day.

79.6 on the week.  I guess I would have got 80 but I thought I had it (I miscalculated going into today’s run).  With the travel, a decent week. Not a lot of speed as I struggled to get going in the dark of the AM or the evening, but I managed some fartlek stuff there in Philly.  No strides – I need to get better at that.  And then this weekend was a nice set of back to back longer runs.  I wanted to get a bit of running on tired legs and I got that today … and a bit of vertical.  A few close compadres have thrown at me that my vert this year has been woefully inadequate – and they are right.  I need to pick at that a bit and while today was not epic, it was a step in the right direction.

This afternoon I did something I can say I have never really done … some yoga.  TZ talked me through a few poses and I have to say a.)  I suck at it b.) I can see the benefit it would provide to me c.) it illustrates how weak or inflexible I am in certain areas d.) it was feeling the tightness from the run today (or this week or this life) e.) I am going to see if I can continue at it with her for a bit.

Saturday 121314

Emil Zatopek – perhaps the greatest the sport has ever seen having accomplished 5k, 10k, and marathon wins in the same Olympics.  Pretty certain that won’t happen again (especially since the 10k is gonna get tossed for interpretive can can dancing or half pipe skateboarding) Good podcast recap on the man here.

Starting to wind down the year with work, so I ought to be able to finish the 25 that influence more set of posts soon.

20.1 miles in the afternoon.   Pretty easy (just under 8 minute pace on the average for the whole of the run), working out the kinks of the travel from yesterday (where I took a goose egg).  Didn’t bring food or water so I pit stopped in the Home Cheapo in Louisville.

Thweatt defended her title at XC Club Nats (good to see local girl and HS coach do well).  I typically struggle with the masters results because they list them by age group but these are actually sequential.  I guess I really want both.

Interview with Tony.

If you really want to geek out …

Friday 121214

Slept hard and slept in, so that killed any window I had to run as I traveled back from Philly today.  I get sort of irked at myself when I do this.  It is really a choice or a demonstration of willpower.  Or lack of willpower.  But I suck getting up out of bed and getting going these days.  After the fact I wonder why I just didn’t lace them up at 10 at night and head out to go get a run on Mt Misery.  Of course I am often doing this wondering as I am barely staying awake in a meeting.

Solid list by Justin.

People were wondering in the Broomfield area what this bullet looking thing was.  In a similar regard, although a helluva less interesting looking, I was wondering what this was in the local open space.  IMG_2752 I think it has something to do with prairie dogs.

I recognize that I’ve been living with a mentality of once I’m successful I’ll be happy and need to change it around to Once I’m happy I’ll be successful.

Today’s listening …

Thursday 121114

What. the. f*ck. (anything to get a record)

What. the. f*ck. 2. (how else can we have governing bodies screw up the sport, or maybe it is already done at the pro level)

Interesting read. (HS phenom turned sniper)

Longer read. (Varner’s report on TF)

Begging a caption.  Mine … “and then I felt my stomach start to rumble.”

So, the sponsor of the XC team we put together last year was PI.  Fair to say it won’t be them this year.

Nearly have the route nailed up for the solstice slog.  Send me a note if you want in.

AM – tough to rise.  It was sort of like this:  It’s much easier to sit inside and promise that I’lll run later. I’ll fed myself some bullshit that I’ll leave it until tomorrow to start taking training seriously and it’s always entertaining creating little plans in your head.  Mainly because you don’t have to do any work to feel the same buzz.  It’s like promising yourself that you’ll write a book at a later date. It won’t happen unless you write today. You won’t become fitter if you just dream up your perfect body. You have to do something to set it in motion. Self delusion is a cruel mistress.

Snowed a bit last night but I made myself get out for a very easy and slow 4.6 miles.  Time to channel some sisu I guess.

Got over to Valley Forge in the evening and was able to explore a bit more.  Nearly all teh snow was gone, except in a few of the really protected places.   Found my way over Mount Joy (not sure if I will make it to Mount Misery as that is a bit further out).  6.5 miles.  This is a pretty cool park.IMG_2817IMG_2819

Wednesday 121014

AM – tired, and late to rise, but I got out for a short jaunt before heading into the office.  3.2 miles.  The degradation of the weather here has not really happened as predicted.  It is chilly and a little wet but not some sort of epic down pour or big snow …

This is pretty good pacing.  It is gonna cost me some beer.  Only one that is really off is the potty stop after mile 14.

Evening – I was completely unmotivated to get out.  Dark, windy, call a wahmbulance sort of stuff.  But once I got out, I knew it was gonna be okay and even talked myself into getting going for probably the truest fartlek I have done in years.  Just go hard for some distance, recover, repeat.  No real rhyme or reason to the distance or the time.  Just go.  7.3 miles.

Nope.  Nope. No way.

Apparently this is a representation of my runs on Strava from the past year.

That looks about right.
