Bill Lee became the oldest person to complete the long course at Fairplay yesterday.  Simply balls.

Saturday AM - met Greg over at NCAR got in a few with him and GF, before connecting up with the Eagle crew.  8 miles.

Gigged a grad party Saturday night.

Got up high with JZ on Sunday above Fairplay, watching some of the the action near Mosquito Pass.  So this was all between 11500 and 13110.

Nice week with nearly 55, over 4k of climbing, a speed session.  I could feel the post tib groaning, especially post Saturday.

Thursday 27JUL2023

AM - got out early (5:30) as I had a full work day on the calendar.  I met up with Lucas over BHMS.  He had a couple guys with him.  They did a short warmup (like a mile) with a couple of strides.  They then got on 400-800 x 4 sets on 75", 90" rest, and then a last 400.  I decided that this being my first workout back I'd just go on the the 400s.  These were 89-92.  Not super hard but not easy either.   A nice little, "get back to it."  For me.  7.1 miles.

Wednesday 26JUL2023

AM - with Eagle practice ... but a half an hour added on before and jogged home too.  Tired legs but some good turn over on some of it.  Oh, the heat is back too.  10.1 miles.

Tuesday 25JUL2023

The clouds made for a nice break from the heat this AM.  Got out with the Eagles and GW on Ridgeview.  Did 8 x 45" on, 60" off.  Nice on those rollers and being near GW kept me a bit more on it than I would have been solo.  7 miles.

Monday 24JUL2023

Monday AM - was able to sneak out before it got to the hear of the day ... a few miles with GW after we kicked off the team.  6 miles.

Afternoon - just chasing a couple miles in my free time along the ditch.  3 miles

Oh - pretty hot.

Started a substack thing.

Week ending 23JUL2023

Busy week - on a full engagement but from home.

Wednesday - opposite direction from yesterday so going up Dillon.  7.4 miles.  Also explored the new connector through Wotgke.

Thursday afternoon - 6.2 which included 10 x 200 on, off with the ons at 44 sec.

Friday - 7.4 miles through Lac Amora, etc.

Saturday - 7.1 miles before heading off to the Jim wedding gig with Spare Change.

Sunday AM - picked berries.

I waited til the heat broke via the clouds and got out of Chautauqua around 4:30 in the afternoon.  Head up to the top of Flagstaff, via my favorite trail that way - Long Canyon.  Saw some wild turkeys.

8.2 miles.  Didn't summit because this was plenty, and time crunched.

Tidy week - 50 miles with a workout, and a fair climb.

Tuesday 18JUL2023

Very similar to yesterday:  hot and clouds rolling in.  Slow.  7 miles.  Legs were pretty tired today.

Monday, July 17, 2023

Monday 17JUL2023

Afternoon after a day of being chained to the chair - 7 miles.  It was 98 when I started but I just kept it slow.  So it was bearable.  And then the clouds blew in so it was more bearable.

Weekend ending 16JUL2023

Saturday AM = joined GW and GF for a few pre miles over in Superior.  We then joined the Eagles for about an hour out and back on the Single Tree Mayhoffer trail west of town.  10.2 miles.  This has to be the longest run I have done since March?  I was definitely a bit tired leg by the end but it was a good little push.

Saturday afternoon was a bit of a blast over at Rails.  I did a small band gig with CG and TS from SC for an hour, and then we were followed by Slyjax and Off the Rail.

Sorry for the shorts shot.  I performed our gig in the typical jeans and boots.  I did one gig last year and saw myself in shorts with the guitar and decided that was just not me.  Since then it has always been with full length pants.  We had finished on this one though and I had broken down my gear and changed.  It was an impromptu call up to play the harmonica and I got caught with my pants down I guess.

Sunday AM - 7.8.  Yeah, running for the watch to get 56 in,.  Legs were a bit tired but in a manageable way.

I guess I need to be past complaining about the ankle.  It is still wonky at times but only if I roll it weird now.  I can say I have move past that.

It was a good week of training - a bit more mileage, a workout, etc.  Still a far far cry from what I was even last fall, but it feels good to be back on the move again.

Friday 14JUL2023

7.5 miles - a bit with the team before getting back to work.  Legs are pretty worked from yesterday (good).

Thursday 13JUL2023

AM - got it in before a full work day.  I do better in the afternoons.

About a 22 minute warm up.  Over to BHMS track and then did 4 x 300 on, 200 off, 200 on, 300 off.  Somewhere between 5:45 to 6 minute pace on the "ons."  Not great but progress.  7 miles.

Ankle is still wonky but bearable.

Wednesday, July 12, 2023

Wednesday 12JUL2023

AM - beat the heat and got in a couple with GW prior to practice.  8.6 miles.

According to the watch, I have 53 plus over the last seven days.  Not a big deal, but want to watch how quickly I come up over a week ... meaning an actual week and not just Mon-Sun.

Tuesday 11JUL2023

Hot in the Front Range.  An afternoon slog along the ditch at 95F.  4 miles.

Cooled off to 94 after work.  3.2 on the sidewalk side of the ditch.  Sloooooow.

SP talked me into a mic at Rickoli in the evening.  It was exactly where I needed to be.

Ikigai

I have seen this before but I came across it again recently.

I can think about this in many contexts:  running, music, my job, etc.  It is interesting to see where each of the darts land when I think about this.  And how those darts move and sway.

I think there is a natural inclination to think about where the circles intercept.  That makes sense.  But I also think it is equally important to think about the far outside of the circles.  And if you are being truthful in your assessment of self  as to where you actually are on each of those circles.  I find, self included, where we self assess is a bit misaligned with reality, or what even our peers would say we stand (if they can be honest) on each of those circles.

So don't lie to yourself.

That is hard.  Your brain is very good at lying to you.  Very good.

Monday 10JUL2023

Mid day in Dillon - 4.6 miles along the dam.  Beaut of a day up there.

Back in the Front Range in the evening and got out after dark on a hot day with JZ for 3 miles.

Sunday 09JUL2023

Was beat from the show, but given I didn't have any alcohol with the gig, I felt better than usual.  Got up, got a text from GW and geared up for an AM run.  I was thinking I'd do seven, but talked myself up to 8.3 to get 50.

I have had a 50 mile run week in 3 months.  In reality I know that doesn't seem long, but it seems like a lifetime ago here.  It felt good to get it.  Yeah, I was chasing miles today a bit to get that number which is a bit ridiculous, but - let's be honest - this is all ridiculous.

My progress is slow.  I only did start running again a month ago, much of my work is at 9 minute pace, etc.  But I can see progress.  In terms of strength / endurance, and slowly slowly chipping away again at pace.

Evening was the climax of a music extravaganza weekend:  Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at the Dillon Amp.  Just wow.  2 solid hours (Dillon has a hard curfew on the facility for music to stop at 10)

Saturday 08JUL2023

Thursday -  AM, 5.0 miles early.  Afternoon 3.1 along the ditch

Friday -  up in Dillon.  Decided I needed some quality so after a 30 minute warmup dropping onto the Blue River Trail, flipped and 10 of minute on and minute off.  Only the last one was on the climb back up to the dam.  I knew is was a good workout.   Not so much from a pace perspective, just a good workout in terms of where I am at.  I could feel it later through the night as I was pretty worked over.

We headed to the Amphitheatre and caught Jenny and Mexicats.  Great show.

Saturday -  an easy 5 in Dillon on the dam.  Ran into Gabby up there who had just run 21 around the lake as part of her training prepping up for Imogene.  Headed back down to the Front Range for a great show at Mother Tuckers.

Wednesday 05JUL2023

July 3 gig in Erie was a blast.

4th of July was a 10k jog, just working off the late night from the gig.  Even though I was dry entirely last night, I was still spent from the gig.  I didn't get home until 12:30, and got there at 2:30.  We played from 5:30 to about 11 with a half hour break in there.

Weather cooled of dramatically overnight.  Wednesday was an easy 7 miles with GW with the Eagles.

Monday 03JUL2023

7 miles in the AM.  Ugly.

Sunday, July 2, 2023

Week ending Sunday July 2, 2023

7 miles easy on the Dillon Rec path out towards Keystone and back - super easy.

Put me at 48 and change for the week - a nice bump in mileage as I look to come back.

But I am most happy with my hill workout from Saturday.  It was just a good old challenge, physically and mentally.

I am still not sure about Pikes.  There are days where I am very certain it would be a horrible idea.  Then other days where I think, "well, it could be a thing just to get it done."

The other thought that came to me over the weekend is that my griping about being in the worst shape of my life ... I guess I'll be looking back in 10 years wishing that I was as fit as I am now.

Back down to the flats for a couple days ... a gig, the 4th parties, etc.

Saturday 01JUL2023

On Friday we came up to Summit County.  Under somewhat typical summer blustery conditions, I headed out on the rec path, but rather than following the dam, I slipped below it into Silverthorne and then followed the Blue River path.  I had never been up that way.  Very nice.  7 miles.

Saturday - I slept weird.  I mean, I slept fine but woke up feeling puffy.  I guess that could be the altitude but I don't think so.

I thought about how my training has been going and I could feel a pull to get 50 miles this week.  After some thought, it was clear that chasing miles was not the best way to seek to advance fitness.  I did a 20 minute warmup and then 10 by a hill on the rec path (6-7% hill, nice clear stop and start, and was about 60-65 seconds for each climb, probably on 1:2 rest, at 9k ish feet).  It kicked my ass, and it was good that it did.  6 miles.

I wanna play this stage.
