Thursday 050814

I have speculated unscientifically that kids seem faster today than they did “in my day.”  Not necessarily at the pointy end (meaning the very fastest) but just the number of kids posting fast times seems to have on the whole increased.  This article seems to support my hunch:  In 2003, for both indoor and outdoor track, 12 girls broke 4:50 for 1600m and only one broke 4:45. Last year, in 2013, 35 girls broke 4:50 with 16 under 4:45. Likewise for the 3200m--in 2003, 12 girls broke 10:30. In 2013, 57 girls could claim the distinction.  In this regard, a CU commit, BHS senior that just ran 9 flat for 3200 is sort of non news, as CU probably has at least 5 guys who can break 8 for 3k right now.

Arguably depth in distance running is increasing everywhere … LR covers this on what Goucher was in 2006 versus what a 13:10 gets now.

Sub 4 miler list (US) is now up to 420.  More than half never ran any faster than their time posted there.

13.1 miles with Bob.  Steady, mostly easy but with the occasional sputtering in there.  Mostly around the D-mesa.  We did take a crack of sorts at GHX hill as well.

Someone let me know it is only about 100 days to Pikes.

Heading out backpacking with JZ and his Scout buds this weekend.  The weather forecast seems to be steadily degrading through Sunday.  Ugh.  But we will make a go of it.  We did a gear shakedown tonight.
