2019 Wrap Up

So, it is that last day of the year and therefore the annual post that lists out the typical stats.

It being the "end of the decade" (not looking to get into that debate if you measure it that way or not), it is minimally worth noting that I accrued around 34279.2 miles on this period.  I am guessing that won't be replicated to that level in any future decade I spin around.

2019:  2963.4 miles,   403.1 hours,  147226 feet.
27 days off
110  travel nights,  5 camping nights, 3 non work travel nights
7.73 hours of running a week on average, with an average of  56.86 miles a week.  Average pace was 7.35 mph.

2019 is a bit lower of year compared to the others in the decade.  I attribute this mostly to the increase in travel for business, but arguably it is also because of a bit more of a back off on pursuit of miles for miles sake.

Prior years ...

2018:  3323 miles, 450 hours, 151,565 feet.
13 days off
74 travel nights,  4 camping nights, 5 non work travel nights
8.6 hours of running a week on average, with an average of 63.7 miles a week.  Average pace was 7.38 mph.

2017:  3622.1 miles, 481.3 hours, 170,115 feet.
12 days off
74 travel nights, 10 camping nights, 5 non work travel nights
9.2 hours of running a week on average, with an average of 69.5 miles a week.  Average pace was 7.5 mph.

2016: 2892.7 miles, 400.49 hours, 143,120 feet.
67 run days off.
31 work travel nights (8% business travel), 14 non work travel nights, 19 camping nights
7.66 hours of running a week on average, 55.32 miles a week, average pace was 7.2+mph, 67.7 miles a week average if counting just the days run.

2015: 3451.5 miles (averaging 66.19 miles a week), 236,905 vertical feet, 478.53.15 hours (averaging 9.18 hours a week), 40 days off and 65 travel nights for work (18%) and then 14 nights of camping.

2014 – 3436.9 miles, 172005 vert and 459.7 hours
2013 – 3493.6 miles, 272300 vert and 512.1 hours
2012 – 3367 miles, 236,110 vert and 529.92 hours
2011- 3629 miles, 264,848 vert and 543.37 hours
I know 2010 was 4100 miles …

Week ending 29DEC2019

Fair week given the holidays and the skid on the weather over the weekend.  Still dealing with the Achilles at some level but mostly choosing to ignore it.
MON AM – 6 miles with the kiddos (well sorta, I watch them go and then I run far behind them).
MON PM – went to jog along the ditch and the Mooney’s were at the track.  I jumped in helping Meghan with her workout, which meant some 300s and 200s for me at 79-80 second pace (she was doing Ks).  Warmed down with her for 5 miles.
TUE AM – a bit chilly but Greg and I got in 7.2 miles, with 6 x 2 minute pickups at 5k effort.

WED AM – 8.5 miles.  Christmas Day and I was dragging in the afternoon.  It started super warm for the time of the year and I actually took the shirt off for a bit.  15 minutes later it was spitting flurry snow and the temps had dropped 20 degrees.

THU AM – 6.2 miles with Greg in some fog and a bit of snow.  About an hour later did some with TZ and then LZ for another four plus.

FRI AM – 7 miles with Greg with the kiddos and practice
SAT AM – we were supposed to have an Alumni run for the XC team but about a half dozen inches of snow came blasting in on the overnight and we decided to postpone it.  Greg and I got out for a bit though.  6.3 miles – super easy in the slip.
SAT PM - still snowing at a good clip. Another 4.1
SUN - mid day:  jogged with TZ to meet JZ and Greg and then ran with them.  10.2 miles.

Friday night I did a gig with Jim, Charles, Steve and Ty.  It was an acoustic show (no drums or bass) of sorts (we did have Jim doing the keys) over at Satire Brewing.  It was fun.  We made a ton of mistakes but it was the first time the five of us were in the same location for this gig specifically (someone was always missing).  We did close to 30 songs.  Here are some pix, and video of Ty and I doing Stapleton’s “Either Way.”

Admittedly, I am finding myself more and more jazzed about music.  Last night’s gig got me feeling fired up the way I used to post a race – where I was thinking about the next thing – the next project.  Looking forward to doing a few different things in 2020.

Week ending 22DEC2019

Good week.
MON – 6.1 miles
TUE – 10.6 miles.  With Gabby and Greg and actually did some quality (first time in 2 and a half months).  It was just 6 x 90 seconds on equal rest but it was good to be moving a bit again.
WED – AM 6.4 miles, PM – 3.7 miles
THU – 10 miles
FRI – 8.4 miles in the AM with practice, another 3.2 in the afternoon.  AM session started with a part of a workout for Braun so it had some faster stuff in it.
SAT 10.1 miles with practice
SUN – 8 miles with JV over Sanitas and Anemone.  Over 2000 vertical – which is a lot for me these days.

60 something plus on the miles this week, with some workout stuff in there and a good climb.  Clawing along I guess.
Sort of a big music week for me.  Had a lengthy practice on Sunday afternoon and another Tuesday.  Gearing up for a show on the 27th – one where I will actually be in full with the band this go around so there is a fair amount of prep to be sure I know the pieces.

Thursday night Rails End hosted another open mic night.  I did four tunes – almost all of them were an on-the-fly call as I got up there.  The guy before me did all quiet tunes so I felt compelled to shift it up to see if I could get the audience going.  Did Post Malone’s “Better Now,” The Violent Femmes “Blister in the Sun,” Caamp’s “By and By,” and finished with “Squeezebox” by the Who.  A guy jumped on the drum kit with that tune and so that was fun.

THUR – PM – slept in and got out in the late afternoon.  10 miles.  Felt good.  Moving well towards the end

FRIDAY – AM – four slow slow miles

SATURDAY – AM – flew back from Pittsburgh.  Did a couple with TZ about the same time I hit the door and then added on another bunch for 10.

SUNDAY AM – with Greg and Gabby on a chilly morning – 10.2 miles

That was the first 70 mile plus week since September.  The Achilles ain’t completely right but well enough.  Not pushing anything just yet but it felt nice to get a week of solid miles in.

Saturday night Spare Change asked me to open for them.  I did five tunes – which is the most I have done before.  It was fun – and sort of interesting to see where I was with this about last year at this time and where I am now.

Week ending 08DEC2019

A week in Galway … the sun comes up late (0830) and sets early (1630) there this time of the year.  I was in the office before both of those, and so, in addition to fighting jet lag for most the week, I also was looking at running in the dark almost all week.My ability or willingness to summon the authority to force myself up and bang out miles in the wee hours  seems more challenged than perhaps what it was in past years.  I did get some and honestly, some of it was better running than I have encountered in weeks:  the Achilles seems to be coming around … or at least only sliding to a dull ache versus the “bite” it was with every step for a bit there.

MON – 3 in the AM and then another 7.3 in the evening.
TUE – off – I couldn’t get it together in the AM with the jet lag and had calls back to the US in the evening
WED – 8.3 miles.  This was actually a pretty good run in the evening along the sea wall.  I might have actually had one mile under seven in there somewhere too.
Image may contain: night and outdoor
THU – 9.2 miles – just took it slow and bumbled around the shore line again

FRI – I woke up early – knowing I had to pack and that with travel starting at the end of the day, any chance I had of running in the afternoon or evening was unlikely.  I stepped outside and it was pouring.  I wandered over to the hotel treadmill and worked out 4 miles.
I took the bus back to Shannon in the afternoon and then did get in another four in the tech park around the airport.

SAT – I got in a very slow and stumbly three before heading off for the SNN=>LHR=>ORD=>DEN journey.
SUN – good to be home and got in 11.3 with Greg, Gabbie, Syd and Marissa.  Beautiful morning on some muddy trails.

Galway was fun.  I did slip out on a couple of nights and trolled through the wet and rainy cobblestone streets that were decked out in holiday lights, with live music coming out of almost every pub.  Certainly some fun there but I was a bit challenged to really enjoy it with the work, the jet lag and a cold that came on Monday evening.

It is a quick turn around this week.  On Sunday afternoon I buzzed back to Pittsburgh.  Out there for the week but as it is a class I am hopeful I can get some good running along the water.

Week ending 01DEC2019

Some of the work from last week and corrective action I have been taking on the Achilles seems to be lending to it taking a turn.  It still ain’t great but it is getting better slowly.  I’d probably be fine if I took a full week or two off of running altogether but that is unlikely – there is just too many fine places to jog.
I realized again this week I have become that old guy that jogs all the time.  That guy.  It ain’t entirely a bad thing but there is a dim recognition that I once looked at guys like that and wondered what the hell they are thinking when it came to them running as they did.  I am not sure what they were thinking about but I am thinking now that I am glad I can still do it, and I revel in the few times where I can get to where it seems the wind by the ears moves more quickly because of what I am doing with my legs.
It was a bit of tougher week of running at home – the big snow early in the week saw to that and then locked the streets in with large amounts of ice and slush for the coming days.

I escaped later in the week to Galway, Ireland – a new location for me on the Emerald Isle.

Spent Saturday evening walking the streets of Galway until I couldn’t take the cold any longer.

TUE – 8.5 miles in the PM
WED -  8.6 miles, mid day
THU – 7 miles mid day
FRI – 9 miles
SAT – traveled to Ireland, 7 miles when I got there
SUN – 11.8 miles jogging around and exploring Galway.

The week ended up at 62 miles – which ain’t bad as of late.  Not a lick of quality though (and none since the end of September) and I doubt I’ll do much of that until this rubber band on the heel gets right.  November becomes my lowest month of miles on the year with the injury and the travel and the holidays and the excuses.

Week ending 24NOV2019

A bit of a crash of a week, with the Achilles really flaring up and the travel.  The running is more for my head than my fitness.

Really hard for me not to run the Mall though.

Saw Mark P on Saturday at his shop, and got some e-stim on the Achilles.  Also putting some various salves and balms on it and using a cork lift in the heel on that side.

Low mileage week but that is what it is.  No Turkey Trot ambitions here this year as I am just trying to keep it all together with duct tape and bailing wire.
