Wednesday 121714

News – the USATF is ****ed.  It is messed up with its race dq’s, its elections of officers, its shady dealings with corporate sponsors, and its inequity in dealing with funding of female versus male athletes in the MUT space.  And that is just naming a few of the latest issues.  It leaves me wondering if I should even engage in anything the USATF touches, including XC next year.  I feel compelled to because there are a lot of good people trying to change it, and because that event is well – frankly fun.  But I also feel that by showing up, I am supporting an idiot organization.

Then there is the IAAF.

-John Treacy says screw it just train harder Ireland.

-More Friel on periodization.

- I think the stat on what % of boys champs versus girls champs at the HS XC Footlocker championships is interesting – as it tells a story of the arc of girls athletic development versus boys.  It will be interesting to see how NXN champs play out.  I’d think that Efraimson is a pretty good shot at making the Olympics in 2020.

- Not running related but a fascinating article on Yahoo’s ride as of late.

- Solid read from the comments yesterday.

Been getting feedback on my thoughts on Leadville.  Good feedback where folks are telling me what to focus on, what not to worry about.  My largest concern going in is the potential meltdown I’d have after the sunsets.  This is based on a case study of one but I got to a point with that case where I was taking  close to two and a half hours to cover seven miles.  That melt down was probably a combination of being woefully underprepared (very few runs over 15 miles that year), going out a bit fast (although never faster than 8 minute pace on a flat and fast course), but mostly just mailing it in and not digging in when it got dark.  I came buzzing into 50 miles at 8:22, but the smoke showing I was flaming out had started back at 20 miles.  I could smell it.  13 and half hours to cover the next 50.  Ouch.  Bob has been happy to remind me that this 50 mile split is slower than his 100 PR.  In any case, I actually held “okay” for the next two laps (or through 64ish miles).  That put me around 8PM, or shortly after the sun set.  From there, things went really south and miles started going to 20 minutes a mile.  It was obviously some fatigue and not just the dark, but I think I checked out at that point.  Bob was able to get me a little straight in the last lap as the sun was coming back up.  By the way, if you look at that graph, you can calculate how I was actually AHEAD of Bob for the first 50 miles (and he’d catch me some where on lap 8).  Yup.

I expect to listen to this tomorrow.

Afternoon – Bob came out to my area, and given it was cool, he schooled the daylights out of me – even though he is less two weeks out of a marathon.  Did six of the kilo repeats … I really had no fight for 8 today and sadly I knew that going in.  Same gig as a couple of weeks ago … odds are down, evens are up, done on a six minute round.  3:31, 3:48, 3:27, 3:51; 3:29 and 3:54.  That put me at 3:39 across the six (or supposedly an average of 29:12 pace for 8k even though it was only six).  An improvement in some regards over a couple of weeks ago, but a step back in others given the lesser reps.  I ran faster but I ran less reps … could be that I ran faster cuz I was with Bob.  I was put a fork in me done on the last climb on the last one.  But even that one was only as slow as my first return trip a couple of weeks ago.  I will take it as progress.   I want to get to a point where I can average sub six on the climbs and the average at 3:35 (over 8).  I think once I am there my confidence to hold that pace on the flats in the XC race will line up.  I will be back to this one. 11 miles.

Given I saw that nearly every FKT in Valley Forge Park was held by David R, I was surprised when caught one by accident last week.  Of course, I was not surprised when I saw this today:

David – go get this one.

Monday 050613

If I am reading Strava right, Canaday broke 30 on the Gregory Ranger route.  Nobody else I know of has been within 3 minutes of that.  And I am not sure I could come down that fast.

Why you suck at running.  No really, why you are not improving.

Thought I was going to be in Pittsburgh this week but that got pushed.

Registered for the BTMR today.   Last run in 2011 because of the 2012 fires.  I ran about a minute faster for the Kohl 5k in 2011, and only 1:58 at Barr in 2011.  Soooo … makes me thinking I might have an issue getting under 2.  Thinking about the Leadville Trail Marathon as it will give me another excuse on top of burro racing to get to the top of Mosquito Pass.

Afternoon 10.1 miles.  Started as a slog but then I started to feel a bit better after 5 miles.

FKT on Middle Route of Green

Sage C shared this video on twitter (below).

A little comparison … So he is reaching the first bridge in 4:35, when I get there more than a minute after that.  13:35 to the Ranger Cottage and I get there 3 minutes something later.  He gets to the Greenman split in 16:40 and I get there in about 21.  At that point, he is already to the Saddle Rock junction (21:30 for him) and I get there … 27 minutesish.

It was good to see a little power hiking in there before the stairs.

34:15.  I have yet to break 40 on this route.

And damn it he did it with snow on the trail.  That is the difference between an OT qualifier and a middle aged old man.

I measure it at closer to 5k (3.1 miles) but no matter.  FKT on this route by a good amount. (like a over a minute)

Thursday 110812

Got a tip via Twitter from Rob Timko that Sage C went 31:48 on the Gregory Ranger route up Green ... edge of parking lot pavement Gregory-Ranger to summit post: 31:48.   That is pretty damn fast, given the prior reported FKT was 33 and change by Schlarb.

Joe Friel seriously posts on the same serious topic I discussed seriously recently.

Jdub posts on the big ditch.  I guess it is that time of year.  Got me thinking about this in March or April quite a bit.

“… participating in a 100-mile foot race is totally self-indulgent, likely dangerous, does not contribute to good health, and is largely pointless.”  Of course followed by:  “When I woke up, I wanted to do it all again.”

Today’s classic reference   “But I tried.  At least I did that.”  … and Danny D betting a dime.

Evening – didn’t get out until late, dark and after dinner.  6.5 miles easy during JZ’s soccer practice.

New Middle Route FKT

Figured with spring upon us and the trails now looking more open, we can get the FKT smack talk going.

Schlarb set the FKT today for the so called "Middle Route” on Green.  He notes:

After GZ's motivational/putting me on the spot comment yesterday, I felt like it was the morning of a race. Right off the bat the legs felt tired as did the body. Last week was totally different from the start as the legs were strong and I felt fresh. I started to rationalizing how last weeks 124 miles was affecting me, Tuesday's intervals, etc... I honestly considered going up Ranger to avoid the disapointment of not running faster than last week's 36:47 on this route.
I held strong to the idea that a painful start could still mean a good overal performance. If I wasn't under 15 minutes at Green Mtn Lodge, I'd run up Ranger instead though.
14:25 at the lodge, looks like I was running fast (faster than last week). First mile split was 12min low. The second mile felt the opposite of the first, I felt strong and confident. Second mile split was 9min low. Things continued to go well and coming up to the last .6 miles, which is the hardest for me, I was feeling confident. I kept the legs moving but was hurting. I know I have an extra gear on this steeper terrain, but right now, I don't have it. I kept things going and snow only slowed me down a little bit on the last few switchbacks after the stairs. I was giving myself motivationsl comments out loud, to get through the last section. Hurting.
To the post I hit 35:56, a new personal record and Fastest Known Time (FKT) for this route, my favorite for training purposes, by 8 seconds and 49 seconds faster than last week. Very happy.

This route, for what it is worth is almost exactly 3.1 miles, 5k.  This is what the elevation profile looks like.

It gains about 2200 feet (plus), but the grades are highly variable.  The lower section of Greenman is super runable, and really fast … where as some of the early stuff in Gregory is much more challenging in terms of grade (some sections reaching near 30 percent) and footing (all runable, but not the new sweetly buffed OSMP stuff).

Congrats Jason for being the first guy to register a sub 36 on this.  Now let’s see who can break that.

Friday 040111

Afternoon – Green.  I missed yesterday morning’s session on Green with Schlarb, so I had the itch to get over to Green.  Plus, April – opening day of sorts and all … why not?  I had not tried my hand at the so called Middle Green route, and figured I’d give it a spin.  My expectations were not high as I have not been doing big hills, and I had done a workout yesterday.  Based on the times I had read, I thought a moderate effort of 50 minutes would be in the cards.  After short warm up via Baseline, I went to a moderate-tempo effort on Gregory.  I used the flatter sections to recover a bit versus push the effort.  Never felt great, but not bad either.  I got back to the double back on Greenman around 25 minutes, and thought I might be able to make a go at 45 minutes (noting that Aaron K was there yesterday).  Little icy on some of the upper stretches that slowed things up a bit but too bad.  Felt good, and was working but not seeing stars or anything.  43:17 for the pretty close to 5k run (14:23, 10:27, 15:38, 2:37).  I will cross post into the FKT post later, and I think I will get the kml file linked too.

Came back via Bear Canyon, and then Enchanted Mesa to bring it to 10 miles, 2690 vert.

Buzz is having some April 1 fun.

Thursday 042910

80 degrees yesterday.  Snowing this AM.  Ah, springtime in the Rockies.

Got a link to this 7:12 R2R2R from Homie last night.  That might be the 2nd FKT?  (On that front, there is Peter Bawkin’s FKT site).  Jason Henrie did a 9:29 a week after the visit from JV and myself.

The decline of higher ed?

I put up two polls to the right … one to determine the best time to have the showdown at Green, and one to determine who is the silver medalist at some mountain down south in August.

Afternoon – the weather cleared so I got outside.  Felt great, and ran 7:30s very relaxed around the tech park.  11 miles.  AHR = 149.  It bounced up towards the end simply because I decided to roll it in.

FKTs

JV and I were yapping the other day, post his great unexpected PR up Green.  There is a concept of the FKT, or the "fastest known time." for these routes.  An FKT can be established on any route, via whatever means you like to attack it (run, climb, bike, etc).  For a while Bill Wright was maintaining a list of trail FKTs on his speed site, but it has fallen out of date (despite my harassment of him about it).  It appears that the Green route that Jeff and I often run (when we are dog free), has an FKT (from Chautauaqua) of an eye popping 34:08 by Nate Schultz (I broke 40 a few times last summer but nothing under 37 ...)

I am eyeballin some of the stuff up Shadow.  I think I can, with a good lead up to Shadow get under 50 for the Ascent up SoBo.

Drop Mr. Wright a note to push him to update the FKTs!

FKTs Green Mountain Boulder - Bear Canyon Route

Update - starting this list on 04/07/11. Good broader reference is Peter Bawkin's FKT site. I will update this as I get info, updates ...

Aaron Kennard provided the first entry I list below here. I am willing to post times from two routes here - one starting at Bear Canyon's entrance off the Mesa and the other actually starting at the Ranger Cottage at Chautauqua.

Aaron's initial entry states: The route I clocked today was from the sign posts at the start of the bear canyon single track at the junction of the mesa trail and the bear canyon trail. I stopped the clock at the summit marker. I started at chataqua and warmed up for the first 3 miles across mesa over to bear canyon. Stats for the ascent route: 3.01 miles – 1842′ vertical – 950′ vertical for the first 2 miles – 890′ for the last mile.

Shorter route

FKTs Green Mountain Boulder - Gregory Ranger Greenman (Middle Route)

Update - starting this list on 01/20/11. Good broader reference is Peter Bawkin's FKT site. I will update this as I get info, updates ... when I write this, I am throwing in names of folks who I know are on the list - even if I don't know their time. There is no "cut off standard" for the list so just comment or drop me a note and I will update the post. Where possible, I will also link to a trip report / time post.

This route starts at the Gregory Lot, at the trailhead, follows the Ranger trail but then breaks up the Greenman trail a few minutes past the cabin on the Ranger trail. Route is about 5k, gaining over 2200 feet. Here is a link to the route's KML file to open in things like Google Earth.

FKTs Green Mountain Boulder - Amp - Saddle - Greenman

11/19/2012 update:  again, according to his Twitter, SC goes up in 28:09.

08/14/2012 update -
according to Sage Canaday's twitter, he ran the front side in 28:43.

07/08/2012 update:
well, Tony put up a crazy fast time on the front route.  New official FKT.

04/20/2012 update,
after some conversation and consideration on this post - I am moving two times to a different part of the list.  These are fast times by strong runners, who have resumes that speak for themselves.  However, their times on this course were in some regard not appropriately timed in some fashion.  Because of this, it is not appropriate to consider their times in direct comparison to the overall list.  That said, I don't want to lose the record of what they did - regardless of how they did it.  Clearly, Rickey ran faster than Dave on that day in May 2009, and later ran a sub 60 at Mount Washington.  We just don't know how fast he really ran - but he beat the rest up the hill on that day in August 2010.  It is my hope that we get a day where we can line Rickey, Tony, Jason, Tim, Johnny T, Jeff V and Dave M up against each other for a true showdown on the hill.

Update - starting this list on 01/19/11. Good broader reference is Peter Bawkin's FKT site. I will update this as I get info, updates ... when I write this, I am throwing in names of folks who I know are on the list - even if I don't know their time. FKTs Green Mountain Boulder - Gregory Ranger

Update - starting this list on 01/19/11. Good broader reference is Peter Bawkin's FKT site. I will update this as I get info, updates ... when I write this, I am throwing in names of folks who I know are on the list - even if I don't know their time. There is no "cut off standard" for the list so just comment or drop me a note and I will update the post. Where possible, I will also link to a trip report / time post.

This route starts at the Gregory Lot, at the trailhead, follows the Ranger trail to the top.

Sage Canaday - updated 050613 according to Strava, Sage went up sub 29:52.  Screen shots on this post over here.  UPDATE 050713 - Sage left a comment that the Strava route is short, and his actual up (AND THE FKT) is 30:42.  If that is true that means there is about a 1 minute differential between what Sage has and what Strava has.  That means generally about a 3% difference in times that could be applied across the board the Strava posts.
Update on 0701713 got a tip via Twitter from Rob Timko that Sage went 31:48 on this route ... edge of parking lot pavement Gregory-Ranger to summit post: 31:48.
 Jason Schlarb - January 2011 -33:16 (runner's top), 33:28 to tip top
Jeff Valliere - 34:37 - (Jeff's split description from a recent post where he improved his PR by a second)
Nick Clark - 35:03 December 2010
Dave Mackey - 37:55 February 14, 2011
Jim Petterson 38:47 (summit marker) July 6, 2010
Brandon Fuller 39:35 from 8-2-2011 - and improvement over 39:45 from 2010-07-01
George Zack
41:53 1-22-13 August 5, 2011 - 43:30 (I am still sure I have done faster than this but I can't find any evidence of that.)
Rob Timko 57:39, 8/2/2011 updated to - 51:54 - from comments on 091712
