Week ending 31MAY2020

Monday AM - easy 6.8 with strides around Broomstock with GW.
PM - with KZ, chatting on her training, goals, etc. Very nice. 4.6 miles.  Will pretty much always say yes to these mi

Tuesday PM - warm - in the 80s.  8 x on Eagle Hill from the trash can to the top (so a bit longer than the last couple of weeks).  69 to start and down to 67 at the end.  Probably an 8 effort, but one of those ones where I went steady on number one knowing that by number 4 it would be work.   7.7 miles.

Wednesday AM - an easy 8.1 that was surprisingly at 7:30 pace even though my legs felt a bit heavy from yesterday.  Middle part was with GW and EC as they warmed up for their workout.

Thursday - well, the PPA cancelled.  There is still a chance that PPM will happen but it seems pretty unlikely in my opinion.  Could be a summer of trying to get 5k fit.

Vid from this week's virtual open mic night

Still working on the sound.  It is rough.  I'm gonna see if I can punch it right into the computer the next go around.

PM - 8.5 miles - strides at the end.  Oh yeah it is snake season.

Friday PM - a bit rough.  Wanted to progress over 30 minutes from 6:30 to 6:10 pace but sort of got stuck at 6:20 pace in the second half.   Still better than 2 months ago though.  Hot, I'm probably gonna need to shift to mornings soon.  10.1 miles.

New addition to the fam.  Meet Sage.

Saturday AM - 8.2 with GW round Lac Amora through the hospital.  Pretty tired.

Sunday - contemplated the hills but the legs were pretty beat so I did 13.2 from the house.  Got moving pretty well once I woke up a bit.  Glad to get it done before 10:30 as the heat was starting to crank up.

Good week on whole.  Month ends with 290.7 miles, almost 40 hours, and almost 19k feet.  On the year I sit at 1455 miles, 60k feet and 196 plus hours.  187 runs on the year, 2 off days.  Still on 28 travel nights because of the shut down, but I am clearly enjoying some benefits from that in terms of fitness.

Week ending 12APR2020

Monday - headed over to Mayhoffer to check on the situation there and then got Cheeto out for about an hour.  Coal Creek is crowded!

He is a good donk.  Definitely easy going, and there are a few new things we are working through ... bridges, turns, etc.  8.3 miles with a few strides at the end.

Tuesday AM - 20 minute warm up, four opening strides, then 2 sets of 5 x 1 minute, with the first set at a 7 PE on 60 seconds rest and the second set at an 8 PE with the rest at 90 seconds.  About a 15 minute warm down.  7.4 miles.  Good workout.

Decided if Pikes cancels, I'll just focus on a mile - see if I can get under 5:20 again.

Afternoon - 3 easy miles with KZ.

Wednesday - 10 miles, out and back to Mayhoffer to check on the donks.  JZ joined me.  Easy day.

Thursday- 8.1 miles along Coal Creek with strides post.

Thursday night did the Rails End Virtual Open Mic again.

In case I needed a reminder of how amateur I am at this ... check this out.

I have been shifting a tiny bit on my music - and will likely take a break from regularly posting on-line "shows" (it sounds a bit weird to call them that), and focus a bit on some tunes I am writing, and  building out some other tunes I have been working on.

Friday - 3 mile warm up with strides, then 20 minute tempo on the track.  Covered 5100 meters on the nose.  10 minute cool down.  Was a bit apprehensive coming into this but figured I'd just try to start at 6:40 pace and carve down from there.  First mile was probably just under 6:30, and I slowly picked it up.  Felt really controlled and on top of it and only had to "think" about it a bit at maybe 3 minutes to go.

Saturday - 10 miles with Cheeto, getting this in on Saturday before the snow blows in on Sunday.  Took almost 90 minutes to warm Cheeto up to the halter ... a complete shift from where he was earlier in the week.  JZ finally sweet talked him into it.  Once we got going it was a fine run, but I did start to feel a bit of the work from yesterday in the last couple of miles.

Sunday  - 10 miles - super easy in the snow.  Tired.  Yeah, it was one of those typical Colorado spring things - a 55 degree swing in a day.

64 miles on the week, but two good workouts on Tuesday and Friday.  Also got in two burro runs, which usually means a little less mileage for the per minute buck, but a different workout in its own way.   The Friday workout was probably one of my better ones in the last year or so.  Normally I'd say that a 6:20 mile is no biggie but I have not really run that fast for three in a long time. Rolled through a 1000 miles on the year this week too.

This next week should be more of the same - a little less quantity and bit more focus on the quality of specific efforts.  Third winter is here so it will be a bit of more of a challenge then the perfect stuff we got dealt last week.

Clearly some of the turn in my fitness as of late is because of some more time.  This is not directly because of the current pandemic events, but indirectly - I am not focused on coaching the HS kids and so I get to focus more on my training.  An interesting ripple.

I have totally done crap for any sort of upper body work since the start of March because of this turn of events, so I need to get to doing something on that.  I was giving thought to heading to Boulder next week for some Green Mountain, but apparently the scene out of Chautauqa is rather nuts - so I may avoid it for a bit and if I hit any hills, they will be elsewhere.

Been doing some work related podcasting too.

KZ’s Kolsch

KZ turned 21 last week and as part of that, she and I decided to do a homebrew for her.  I let her pick what she wanted – with the caveat that it could not be a Belgian brew (as those taste like dirty socks strained with water).  Not surprisingly, she leaned to her affections for Germany and selected a Kolsch.  It was fun walking her through the science and the art of the brew process.

This is the first brew I have done at home in probably five years, so it was fun to break out the equipment (although it needed a lot of cleaning).  We even found some IPAs I had not cracked since the last go around and surprisingly they were fine and had stood the test of time.  I have never done a Kolsch … this one seems to be stacking up at 1.042 SG so is likely to come in at a 5-5.5%ABV.  It is bubbling nicely already this AM.

Oh yeah there was a little cake too.

Weekend 16-18FEB2018

Not an ideal weekend for running or training … Friday we headed out to Ames to visit KZ.

Image may contain: one or more people and people sitting

When we got there I thought we’d be able to run at the field house but after much to do to get prepared to go there, we learned JZ – as a minor – could not run in the field house after 6 as a minor (even with us present) (but he could the next day from noon to five).  We went to dinner.

JZ showed more discipline than me by getting on treadmill for 35 minutes at 10 at night.  I made my way to the bed instead.

We did make it back to the field house (Leid) on Saturday.  The big 300 meter oval was tied up with folks shooting hoops, so after a warm up, JZ and I went to the upper track (yes, there are two tracks on top of each other in the building).  The upper is a touch smaller (5.5 laps to the mile so 292 meters ish versus 300 meters) and not as well curved but it was very nice (given the pretty cold and icy temps outside).

There are something like 36k students at the university.  Amazingly I ran into the one from Colorado that broke Brent Vaughn’s state all comer’s record for the 3200, Tanner Norman.  It was good to chat with him for a bit.

JZ and I got in a tempo (25 min) and I felt pretty good about managing 6:20 pace through that.  We spent a good chunk of the day walking around the university.

Sunday was back to CO.  And while I had aspirations to get a run in when I got back, it was definitely one of those cases where the trip back was significantly longer feeling.  Fried when I hit the door at 7:30, I was in bed within the hour.

A low volume training week but I got in some workouts.  Still with Pikes on the radar, 50 mile weeks ain’t going to cut it.

Week ending 26NOV2017

A week home – a reprieve from the recent business travel buzz.  I was sharing with someone this week that it is not so much the act of travel that is a challenge.  Frankly it is an easy target to bitch about the travel and gripe about things like TSA.  It is really not bad.  Being away from home however and not tending to that … that is the challenge.

It was good to be home in Colorado this week.  KZ came home from ISU for break.

She made it a point to sit me down and get me to watch Stranger Things with me.  She had already seen it with friends back in Ames, but she wanted my butt in the seat to watch it.  It is certainly enjoyable … it effectively hits on so many of those 80 themes and movies folks like me enjoyed as a kid:  some Stephen King, E.T., Poltergeist, Goonies … toss in a bit of the retro D&D … good stuff.

I got in some running but the highlight of my week in that regard was the Thanksgiving Day 5K over in Louisville.  It is a free 5k, so there is no official timing or results, but it still runs fairly competitive.  Given the lack of any faster work in my recent history, I was seriously doubting if a sub 20 was in the cards.

I lined up about 10 rows back with the Eagles XC women and coach Greg, and we shared some pre-race laughs.  The girls had just done a workout the day before so they would run together fairly easy.  There were also other former Eagles out and it was nice to catch up, share some holiday smiles and a few light hearted jabs.

Once the race went, I quickly recalled why as a younger man, I made it a point to never be more than a row or two back from the start.  Even though we may have been only 5-10 yards behind the start line, it took some 10-15 seconds to pass it.  I started my watch at the threshold but even after the start it was a bit of a bob and weave affair to get going.    It all settled down after about a minute of course, but it felt like way more than that.

Here’s a thing that is positive for me about not being particularly race fit:  I tend to run my races a bit more appropriate for that fitness.  In other words, when I am in pretty good shape, I am more likely to botch a race by going out too fast in the opening half mile.  However when I am off game a bit, it is as if I know better and hold back more to my abilities.  I passed the opening mile in 6:05 – and given the 20 minute thought in my head I was wondering if I was looking at a pending blow up.  The second mile was slightly uphill and upwind, and the pace slowed as we climbed to the course high point – 6:22.  I was passing folks fairly consistently and only being passed by a couple of people.  At two miles the course turned back towards the race finish and downhill, and I managed the fastest mile of the race for me in 5:55.  There was no real kick in me over the last 300 yards in sight of the finish banner but I managed a sub 19 with an 18:44.  The course may have been a tad short, so it could even be a 19 low if I am honest.  Garmin tracked me 6:07 pace for whatever the distance was.

That is certainly not great but considering my expectations, the amount of travel I have had (along with less than stellar diet and beverage intake), and not touching any miles at six anything pace in a long time … it is pretty good for me.  It had me realize for the millionth time that few things motivate me to perform as much as getting out there and performing.  Competition is a grand motivator for me, even if my most competitive days are past.

The rest of the week was easy jogging – although on Saturday, riding a bit of Thursday motivation, I got in a handful of 500m intervals at 5:20 pace (1:40).  My legs were still a bit burdened with the effort from Thursday but it felt good to get a bit of rolling in.

Other news in the week – it was a fun Thanksgiving.  While I was still busy with work at home for the front of the week, it seems that this time of year always starts to drive a bit of greater contemplation for me.  It was good to have some family and friends and perhaps that encourages that.

JZ got his wisdom teeth removed, and with that we learned that he and Percocet don’t go well together.  Later in the week we did a little celebration (a couple days early) for his 17th birthday.

There was a fair amount of anxiety within the Eagle XC camp as we had to sit until Saturday to learn if the team had been awarded an at-large bid to the NXN meet.  I was pretty doubtful at first, putting odds at 20 percent but as the week marched on and I listened to Parker, read the Milesplit break downs I was increasingly encouraged.  We learned Saturday night that the women had indeed earned their second trip to the big meet in Portland.

Sunday I headed to MSP.  With Portland in the mix, I might have just packed a bag for the next ten days.

75+ miles on the week, with showing some hope on a couple of quicker runs in the mid week.

I found this video to be good this week where we were considering “thanks.”  Dennis gets a bit rich on the “preaching” but the message is solid.

Lots of good podcasts listened to this week but in particular I found the Jocko podcast 100 to be very very good (101 is solid is well).

Wednesday 16AUG2017

We overnighted in Omaha.  We snuck out for a quick run on the south west side of town before heading over to Ames, and getting slaughtered by rain on I80.

Iowa State has a beautiful cross country course, and they have hosted the NCAA XC Championships multiple times.

We got KZ to Ames, into her dorm, and then TZ and I headed back down to Des Moines.  From there I headed off to Pitt for work.  More pix on all of this once I get settled.
