This route starts at the Gregory Lot, at the trailhead, follows the Ranger trail but then breaks up the Greenman trail a few minutes past the cabin on the Ranger trail. Route is about 5k, gaining over 2200 feet. Here is a link to the route's KML file to open in things like Google Earth.

37:51 2-23-11 -stating in the comments: I started at the gregory canyon parking lot (trail head post), up gregory canyon to green mtn lodge, then to the left to go up greenman (relatively flatter/fast secion), to the right turn at the saddle rock junction and finish at the summit post.
My Garmin 405 had the route at 3.15 miles, 2,290ft climbing, in 37:51.

ReplyDeleteThanks, I will relish every second at the top :)
Added Jeff's ascent.
ReplyDelete37:51 this morning post to post. The first two miles or so was rock hard ice with long streches of bone dry rock and trail... Last 3/4 of a mile was fast and smooth with great packed snow.
ReplyDeleteJason - to be clear, you did this route, specifically?
ReplyDeleteGZ,

Is this the route you are calling "Green Mtn Middle"?
Thanks for doing these!
You passed the test. Yeah. I guess. It is a longer route up Green than either the back or the front, but as a result, easier grade. Not a typical route. I have it added.
ReplyDeleteI honestly like this route the most. The section where it splits from Ranger is lush, cool/damp, has little springs (summer), not to mention the great trees.
ReplyDeleteYes, the frontside is impressively gnarly(technical) and steep, but I enjoy the variability in pace and change in muscle group utilization due to change in grade.
Green's Middle route has awesome rhythm: steep start followed by a nice faster gear change section before the lodge, a mildly steep strech, then fast again after the ranger-greenman junction, real steep at the greenman Saddle rock junction, followed by the faster switchback section and then the rocky steep 50 meters to the finish.
I love it.

ReplyDeleteGreat morning for the crew running up Gregory/Greenman “Middle Route”. We have some updates for the FKT from this outing.
I believe Aaron ran 45??? He needs to post his time, Levi ran 40:05, which is an awesome PR for him.
As we warmed up and were discussing what our best splits were for the middle route, I realized I had no clue what my time was for the middle and guessed 34 or 35 minutes. I hit the mile split before the lodge with 11 high (I don’t have my “Stick” to download the data at work), second was 9 mid and then with my quads burning, usually it is my calves, I hit 13 something for the 3rd mile, 1:51 for the last segment to the post. Total time was MAYBE 35 high, probably 36 low. I just saw my old best was 37:51, which is a very nice surprise.
Levi now is the second fastest runner for the middle route and Aaron is less than a minute behind JVs time. Good day indeed
The trail was ice free most the way then had a few spots to avoid and then some ice to negotiate the last bit from the stairs… maybe a 30 second slow down total.
36:04 is the split from my watch.
ReplyDeleteThanks GZ!
Checked out the route today, 43:17 for me. Happy with that as a baseline to start. This is a fun route.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I will add a link to the KML file soon too.
ReplyDeleteNice work george! 43 minutes "checking the course out".

ReplyDeleteGot it - congrats? Was that pre the last big snow?
ReplyDeleteWatch out ... could see a sub 36 on this route soon. Schlarb just ran 36:47. http://jasonschlarb.blogspot.com/2012/04/weekly-summary-april-2-8.html
ReplyDeleteGreen Mountain's Middle Route/"Green Mountain 5K"
ReplyDeleteAfter GZ's motivational/putting me on the spot comment yesterday, I felt like it was the morning of a race. Right off the bat the legs felt tired as did the body. Last week was totally different from the start as the legs were strong and I felt fresh. I started to rationalizing how last weeks 124 miles was affecting me, Tuesday's intervals, etc... I honestly considered going up Ranger to avoid the disapointment of not running faster than last week's 36:47 on this route.
I held strong to the idea that a painful start could still mean a good overal performance. If I wasn't under 15 minutes at Green Mtn Lodge, I'd run up Ranger instead though.
14:25 at the lodge, looks like I was running fast (faster than last week). First mile split was 12min low. The second mile felt the opposite of the first, I felt strong and confident. Second mile split was 9min low. Things continued to go well and coming up to the last .6 miles, which is the hardest for me, I was feeling confident. I kept the legs moving but was hurting. I know I have an extra gear on this steeper terrain, but right now, I don't have it. I kept things going and snow only slowed me down a little bit on the last few switchbacks after the stairs. I was giving myself motivationsl comments out loud, to get through the last section. Hurting.
To the post I hit 35:56, a new personal record and Fastest Known Time (FKT) for this route, my favorite for training purposes, by 8 seconds and 49 seconds faster than last week. Very happy.
