AM – easy easy four miles.  It was actually chilly.

Mid day – five and change with Jim Robbins.  Always a touch quicker with Jim, as his easy is bit closer to 7 minute, 7:15 pace.  Not a problem for a short run like this.  He gave me the scrunched forehead look when I talked about a 100 miler.

Sports Illustrated Coverage of Pikes from 1975.

Quarters tomorrow, Broomfield High, 3PM.  Feel free to join me.  Of course, things can go awry.  There could be a football game or something as far as I know.  Just need to roll with it.

  1. Easy = 7:00-7:15. Nice.

From the SI article: "before the runners can stop for a drink from French Creek". I'm sure it's better water than some places, but I'll filter mine thanks.

Wonder who drinks from creeks and who doesn't, and if they've gotten ill.

  2. Cool article - is Trujillo's ascent (2:01:47) 2nd fastest all-time? I was surprised it was so close to Matt's record.

  3. GZ: Ever meet Rick Trujillo? Would love to meet him. The Runner's World story on him a few years ago was great. Too bad he and MC don't get along.

  4. Is that five (hundred yards) and change at 7 pace...? Might be able to fit that in with ya ;-) Not touching the 100 miler bit. Before you know it, you'll be running them every weekend like someone else we know!

  5. Alex - Trujillo's time was on a course 1.1 mile shorter than today's route, beginning at the Cog station, rather than at the courthouse. Rick's approximate adjusted time is a 2:09, which, of course, is still blazing.

  8. Trujillo's 2:01 ascent was on the old short course that started up by the Cog, about where the BTMR starts. It was 1.1 miles shorter than the current course. The "adjusted" time would place it at a 2:09:27

    See http://www.skyrunner.com/ppresults/1975.htm

That said, I'd be very happy with a sub 2:10 ;-)

  9. Yup - thanks for clarifying the 75 course Nick, John - and good question Alex.

Wyatt - never met Rick. Not sure if he and MC get along or not - but I am not going to let a RW article determine that for me. ;)

Mtnrunner2 - the BTR list serve lights up once or twice a year about drinking straight from high creeks. Folks on both side of the stream there so to speak ...

HappyTrails ... that guy is a little crazier than me for sure.

By the way - the coolest part of those old SI issues (pointed out to me by someone in the know) is the "view this issue" button on those pages. Check it out. The cigarette ads alone are pretty amazing.

  10. Apparently nobody found it ironic that a sports magazine contained one cigarette ad every 6 pages. ??

Can't make a mid-afternoon Friday run, but I'm kinda craving a Boulder Mountain running fix on the weekend.

  11. Weekends are for soccer these days for me.

The full page cig ads are amazing. In an athletics mag.
