Did you read Matt F's post? "Injuries just happen". One of the worst statements I've ever read. Although- I was sleeping the other day and my hamstring just tore, totally out of the blue! HA! I remember a guy came in to the bike shop I used to work at and the whole front of his bike was collapsed and folded in (he obviously had hit something damn hard or drove into his garage with it on his roof) and he wanted to warranty the bike because "it just did that out of the blue!" He swore he didn't do anything. Maybe it was Matt!?
Great profile pic. Another Rocky pic if I recall right.
I read Matt's post (and CV's follow to it). I probably read it wrong because of my bias but I got a different message.
It is pretty clear that Matt is dealing with some crap - particularly in light of his post prior to that one.
Anyway, he said: "Injuries happen. Almost never do they occur purely because an athlete is trying to train harder than is reasonable."
Sure ... I can agree with some of that. It could also be that in addition to their training, the athlete is not getting enough sleep, is standing on their feet all day at their job, is eating like sh*t, were just plain unlucky by walking their leg into the side of a car door and screwing up their knee, or landing wrong on their foot on some rock ... whatever.
I guess what I read was that there are some unlucky injuries (you were struck by lightning). There are dumb injuries (lack of recovery as an example). And then there are stupid injuries (you ramp up too quick, too much volume and speed, etc).
All that said - I think durability is also a trait in the genetic mix. While you can train fitness, and increase your "constitution" while doing it - I think the same way some have won the lottery ticket with insanely high VO2, some have also won it with a (yet to be defined measure) strong set of unbreakable bones and sinew. Of course, the opposite holds true - there will be folks who are born with the opposite. At some point neither matters if you don't train.
I look at a guy like Ritz who seems to be a bit more injury prone. Is that his training or is he a bitter weaker on the durability side?
But all of your arguments are describing why Matt's "Almost never do they occur purely because an athlete is trying to train harder than is reasonable." is BS. In order to make forward progress you can't train beyond your body's ability to recover. If your diet is crap and you train too hard, then it was unreasonable training. I take the stance that everyone can exploit their genetics to their 100% potential with appropriate training. If Matt got injured then it's because his expectations are too great, he trained beyond what is reasonable for him. Period. Injuries don't just happen and I think this could lead in to a commentary on how our society has digressed. Few people take responsibility for their own actions. People are over weight because they have eaten too much- this happens to tie in to a law of physics... it's not genetic. A person may have a genetic predisposition to gain weight, but in order to gain a pound of FAT you have to consume a certain number of calories, this is not disputable. I see people often saying disclaimers for their own mistakes and choices. Yes- getting struck by lightening sucks, but if you are on a golf course in a storm then it was bad choice on your part. Matt had the choice to not push his body to it's breaking point, he made the wrong choice and is now blaming fate. Bull crap. I'm not being unsympathetic to him being injured, I'm bothered that he doesn't take responsibility for his choices. Injuries don't JUST happen. Pay attention and step off the curb right. Unlucky injuries? Dumb injuries. "Lack of recovery" is a choice. Stupid injuries? Ramping up too quick is a choice. Too much volume and speed is a choice. Everything is a choice. If someone breaks in to your house you should have had better security. And I am certainly not perfect in this regard. I can do much better myself.
I get what you are saying. I get the disposition towards living a choice view of life versus one where things just happen to you.
... however you are pushing this a bit too hard in some of the societal parts in my opinion. If your house gets broken into you had poor security? Think about that in terms of murder or rape victims.
Again, I get the choice thing and agree. There are things that are beyond choice however.
Ya... no doubt that was too hard a push on my part. I'm quite opinionated (as you know) and conversations like this won't have a happy ending. But just so were clear... vanilla IS the best flavor ice cream in the world and if you don't think so then I hate you. ha
It is only the best flavor because YOU CHOOSE it to be. Unless there is a genetic disposition somewhere for that. Maybe there can be an act passed to help folks who are helpless addicts to vanilla ice cream.
I am sitting here laughing my ass off at this. Athletes are such type A personalities.
Hey GZ, nothing but the best of luck and good wishes for you Sunday.
Regardless of what happens you are still the same person you were on Saturday night. Now having said that, I can't wait to get a big shit eating grin on my face when I see your name show up in the results with a 2:3X ascent and a solid top 10 finish overall.
The data analysis dork can't also wait to see the plethora of numbers and statistics that shortly follow on this blog too!
Brett - thanks. That would be a day exceeding expectations for sure. I'll see what I can make this two wheel drive do as I take to the Barr Trail Highway and push the needles to the red.
Dude... it's Thursday.
