Wednesday plans
- I am getting feedback from my audience of three people that my updating of a post throughout a day is “not meeting expectations.” Thus, a different post for this … Wednesday I will be down on Pikes. I expect to start at the “start” at 8AM and do a full Ascent. I am not sure how I will take this run, so the run up could take anywhere from 2:30 to 3:15. If I feel really good, I may do some extra credit on the upper most miles on the mountain. I may have some other folks with me, so we might have a car on the top … or we might hitch down. Drop me a note if you want to join.
I'm jealous.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a matter of if I WANT to, it's if I'm able.
ReplyDeleteKevin - of course, I have been itching to do all those MW runs you have been doing.
ReplyDeleteIf you've never been on the Elk Park trail, you should get your extra credit there. Beautiful section of the mountain.
ReplyDeleteBrownie - I am quite jealous of all the runs that take place down there - reading the Dewitt CRUD reports, and yours ... at least a year's worth of well established trails alone to explore.
ReplyDeleteBut given my timing, I will focus on the "race track."

ReplyDeleteBibs are up baby.
Carpenter 13. Mock 14.
ReplyDeleteI smell an omen.
Naw, matt has 13 simply because it will be his 13th marathon :-) (same with having #20 last year when it was his 20th ppa/m)
ReplyDeleteOkay - omen for Mock then.
ReplyDeleteGZ, I have as much talent and knowledge as you do in your little pinky finger...but if I were lucky enough to be on Pikes Peak tomorrow, here is what I would do.
ReplyDeleteI would start with the idea I was going to go 95% effort. I would reassess along the way to make sure I was holding together.
Why 95%? Well not 100%, because you don't want to take the risk that you cause an injury or crack early and ruin the purpose of the workout. But not less because you are in a different shape this year right? 1 year older, but better physically/aerobically? So by putting in a good honest effort, you'll better be able to know what splits to be shooting for on race day?
There's a big difference between 2:30 and 2:45, so it would be beneficial to know on race day where to best set your split goals from the start, right?
Anyways, just my 2 cents. Like I said, I'm jealous that you have the chance to just do it.
One thing I forgot to mention....
ReplyDeleteI went to the summit today for a little high altitude speed work and the road was closed at Glen Cove (11,500ft) till 9am due to paving operations on the top mile of the highway.
The ranger indicated that they would be doing the same tomorrow and maybe thursday if the weather is not good (it was perfect all day today).
So by the time we got up there it was 9:30.
Thus, it may be a good day to sleep in. Normally the highway opens at 7:30am (it was 7:00 last year) but it may be good idea to bring a good book (hanging out at 11.5 aint so bad)
Brett - my sentiments exactly on how to approach the run.
ReplyDeleteI am going to listen to my body, and if anything err on the side of the conservative. At this point, I am more focused on what I can do to NOT screw things up then looking to gain significantly more fitness. "Fitness gains" at this point will come via an appropriate approach to the rest of the days.
I am not putting a huge amount of stock on how this run goes. It might go well, it might not. It is not a complete view of how things on race day will go on either side.
I doubt a 2:30 as much as I doubt a 3:15. It was just a range. 2:30 is unlikely because my best is 2:37. I did 3:07 feeling like ass in the marathon last year on the double - so hopefully 3:15 is on the unlikely side too.
(and I don't buy the knowledge / talent thing).
Going to miss seeing you out there this year bud.
John - thanks for the tip on the road. Looks like I might be flying solo anyway.
ReplyDeleteDon't leave your best race out there tomorrow... there's more risk to benefit at this point. Practice race fueling above all else. On race day your nutrition can make the difference between a great race and shitty one. Nutrition on a race this long is more important than anything, and I do mean anything.
ReplyDeleteGoing by feel is a good idea. BTW, I like your new banner photo. It looks like you're waiting for the vultures to take you away.
ReplyDeleteKevin - so those trees up there are called bristlecone pines. Some are thought to be 1000 years old.
