AM – 4 miles easy.
It was like international bike and walk to school day or sumthin like that. JZ decided he’d ride his cycle.
Post JZ’s soccer practice last night, we went over to BHS and caught the second half of the soccer game against Centaurus. BHS was down 2-0 (or is that nil?) when we got there. They won 3-2. Fun stuff.
KZ would have come but she had a ton of homework. The general rule I guess is that a kid is supposed to have 10 minutes of homework per grade level they are in. So in other words, if you are in 3rd grade you have a half an hour of homework. So as an eighth grader she has 80 minutes of homework a night. I am fine with that generally but at time it seems like a ridiculous amount. I know I was not pulling 2 hours a homework a night my senior year. But then again, I guess that is why we are considered behind so many other nations?
I have not had enough coffee yet to read all of this but apparently IM marathons can be 10% shorter than 42.2 kilometers?

Easy mid day over at my office around 1 if anyone is up for it. Quarters tomorrow at 3 at BHS.
I have become pretty bad at reading books recreationally. So I am having the kids queue that stuff up for me. So they have had me read over the last couple of months all the “Lightning Thief” series and now the “Kane” series by Rick Riordan. A sort of related off shoot is that my 13 year old daughter has more or less taken over all the music devices in the home and so I am pretty consistently barraged with Adele (which KZ says is okay but gets boring because she only sings about how elusive some guy is in everyone of her songs) or Sara Bareillis (where KZ really likes the piano stuff that is in there). So kids rule my entertainment choices … (other than the aforementioned FF show this weekend).
Took a wellness assessment at work today. Here are some parts of the questionnaire. Good thing I am not Brownie.
Mid day – got out with Jim, and we headed over to the Open Space south of Rock Creek. I had to show him the pull up bar. We each managed 12. 9 miles.
I have a race against Brandon in a few weeks. Be sure to hit him real hard in the mosh pit.

ReplyDeleteCompletely blown away by how much homework my kids do. I got by on 8 minutes a night if that. In general I do believe it is a positive thing, but it does get a little out of hand occasionally.
So what do they do 7 hours a day while "in school"? Sounds like an efficiency in the classroom issue....

ReplyDeleteI WISH my sophomore boys put in almost 2-hours of homework in at night, maybe they'd actually get everything turned in then. But if you do any sort of high school activities too (one does track, the other marching band), it becomes impossible to keep up and get more than 6 hours of sleep each night. It makes me manic.
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly the issue Jill. The kids have school, homework, music, sports, cub scouts, band, social stuff, etc. Too much!!
ReplyDeleteYes, agreed, way too much (and I taught high school up until this year). The need for schools to produce high test scores for a better ranking drives teachers to have no alternative than to cram too much information down students' throats and expect them to figure it all out on their own at home. No wonder high schools have such a high drop-out rate; I feel sorry for the "average" child who feels swallowed. It's a wonder there aren't Columbine cases on a daily basis! I could go on and on, but this isn't a blog about the failures of our education system... :)

Justin - if the weather is decent, I expect to do that thing. Or attempt to. Just to make myself feel worthless. Maybe a party on Sunday afterwards.

Mtnrunner2 - he is pretty dang good on it. I might get him an off road tire and wheel for it next. I did have him stop playing the trumpet while on it because I did not want to buy a new trumpet or new teeth.
We see a guy on a mtn. unicycle all the time - nuts what he can ride on that thing. The trumpet would be much cheaper than teeth.....
