I love Dave Grohl

Nearly as fun might be this.

Matt Carpenter’s most awesome database of Pikes results is updated now with 2014 results.  How bad ass was Senovio Torres downhill in his 60yoAG record?  It was the second fastest among all folks over 40, and the 9th fastest in the entire field.   I love geeking out over that data.  Hmm, I would have been 151st in an overall Ascent this year, but 28th in the climb in the Marathon.  I have toyed with the split sorts a bunch of ways and I can see how comparatively poorly I split down through to the Aframe and then how I Was able to pick it up (comparatively) after that.  Love the db.

Tim Bergsten has a lot of great photos from the weekend in Manitou.

I heard a kazoo today on a podcast today and realized that I don’t hear them that often.  In fact, this must be a rare week because it was the second time I heard a kazoo in that time period.  The other place where I heard them … at the Cirque SAR station at Pikes.  Those guys are a crack up with their kazoo’s.  They play all kinds of stuff like Chariots of Fire,  the theme to Star Wars, etc.  Those guys and the dude who says in an ominous tone “Welcome to the Golden Stairs” to every person who comes by … (and then when you come down he says, “see you next year.”)  … I do imagine that I might be one of those guys out there at some point but I am not sure doing Tool on a kazoo would be appreciated.

I got wind of another 100 firing up in Colorado, this one in the Fairplay/Breck are in early August.  Even though I love that area, this race is not for me for a variety of reasons foremost being the timing in relation to Pikes.  Nonetheless, hearing of it got me wondering about the number of 100 mile races in Colorado.  With this one, I think they are HR, Leadville, the new Ouray 100 (which I think will be the same weekend), the Boulder 100, the Grand Mesa 100, and the Divide 135.  So there are more than a handful. Some of these races have less than 20 finishers so maybe it is fine to have those niche events like that.  I couldn’t find results for the Grand Mesa on Ultrasignup so maybe it folded?

Fun read – Liza’s Leadville report

Brandon’s report.  Hard to see that guy still working it there, but I get it.  Wayatt’s report.  Apparently between the two of them they lost 27 pounds in the race.

Stoked that one of the GOM - Bob pulled off an 18th in 20:51.  He will never have a blog, so here goes:

After screwing around with the stupid blog part for feeds for a better part of the summer, I decided just to rebuild the list there over time.  I think it is back up to speed, but I am still adding to it … I will suddenly get a post from someone like Kieran who has not posted in a really long time and I will go and add it.

I heard this interview with architect, designer Thomas Heatherwick Sunday AM as I was waiting in the car for the race start.  It is pretty good.  This is the guy that designed the Olympic cauldron in London, and has his eye designing the garden bridge in London.

Planning for the next big family adventure has started.IMG_6759

5.6 miles easy.Still fairly sore, but it is working out.  Biggest issue is the chaffing I got under my right arm.  I am okay with it until the deodorant goes on and then there is a bit of a wince.

  2. As for the Grand Mesa http://ultrasignup.com/results_event.aspx?did=24967 Info on this race has always been difficult to obtain. It's like they're not fully vested in this race succeeding. Such a beautiful area too.

There is this one a week after HR. http://www.everrunracing.com/#!crawford-100m/c169t I believe 2 finishers this year, including Rob from the Fort. No finish info.

And if that weren't enough. We have a 200 miler coming up next year. https://www.facebook.com/Colorado200

I get that the ultra sport is growing leaps and bounds but when does this all become too much? I think it's already there, but I'm 40 (which means I'm old and grumpy like you!).

    1. So, just like, oh, I dunno, restaurants, I think some of these will be flash in the pan and disappear over time. Just like any 5k too I guess. Interesting to watch that growth though. HR and Leadville will continue to survive and thrive ... the rest ... I think they are all coin flips if they are around in five years. Or even three.

  3. You aggregate so much content you are blowing my mind. You need to legally change your name to Reddit Zack.

Again I'll say that Liza Howard is the Erma Bombeck of ultrarunning moms. Nobody gets that, so I guess I'm officially old.

If you are experiencing chafing, the only answer may be T-Rex-in' it

    1. My work network won't let me get to that "T-Rex-in it" site so I can only imagine.

Liza is clearly the girl next door.
