Some Pikes Pix

Gasping for air at the Cirque aid station.  You can see how I had opened my water bottle for the filling here. If you look carefully over the volunteer’s shoulder – you can see the finish way up there in the distance.  Photos here are courtesy of John Garner (who may have won the prediction contest – something I still need to check).  Yes … I am not really running here.  That was pretty much the case up there.

I got this pic from Brad P.  It comes at the finish.  It clearly shows a bad habit I get when I am tired and that is a rolling of my head back.  Not a big deal here as I am three feet from the line, but I do remind myself pretty consistently when coming down to LOOK DOWN, as it keeps my head forward (and neck a bit more relaxed).

Post race … listening to 28 wins between the two of these guys (from JV)

Top five masters … I have my arm around Steve G who also won six marathons in a row in the 70s.

  1. Wish I had been near the Bottomless Pit sign to yell at you this year, maybe something like, "What are you doing walking!? This is a f*#&ing running race!!!" Might have gotten the EMT folks to laugh again.

  2. Funny. I did that yelling a bit below the 2 to go sign. You get a lot of encouraging words from folks coming up. Usually I am pretty quiet because I am beyond talking. They are all like "good job!" "nicely done!" So for a bit to get myself straight I yelled for them too.

But every person I saw sitting on a rock I told them to get up. "THAT ROCK IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!!!"

  3. Love the podium pic :) Yeah, baby.

It cracks me up that you just yell stuff out while running by. I'll bet people are just NOT expecting that from some out-of-breath racer coming up a 14er.

  4. Oh, thank God I was not sitting on a rock and got yelled at!! ;) I was leaning on one here and there...but not for long. Excellent podium position, woohooo!!!

  5. Thanks mtnrunner2. I was pretty satisfied with the finish yesterday but I will confess ... I looked at those results today and am already itching for those five minutes on the up!

Jill - thanks. It was kind yelling. Seriously. It was "Come on! Get up. Constant forward motion! The rock is not your friend." They still did not look like they wanted to hear that.

  6. Any thoughts of you doing the PP Road Ascent next Sunday?

  7. NO WAY.

First of all, I am a bit beat up after that down. Second - it seems weird to me to run a road race that does not go to the top of the road.
Third of all, my kid has a soccer game.

  8. Makes good sense. I'm curious to see how the race pans out / attendance / reviews of the course etc.

  9. Congrats on your race and thanks for taking us along for the journey. Always fun to hear about the ups and downs (literally and figuratively). Times aside, there is a lot to be said for executing well with what you have on a given day. Well done!
